I immediately dug them up and a few days later this, full blown "mushroom"? showed up! And in a completely different area than the original shoots.
This died in 1 day, it showed up that morning and was dead by the end of the day. Weird, I know! Then the next day I noticed these different "mushrooms" growing in another completely different spot.
(oh and in this picture you can see it's right next to the Hosta.... so maybe that's what's killed it?)Anyway... the yellow, spongy mushrooms have shown up regularly now. They only last a day or two then completely dry up. I have NO idea where they came from - and they don't seem to be harming any of my other plants... so weird. I haven't looked up what it is yet. And I plan on mixing in compost soon anyway, so I will do a good "digging up".
Any ideas though? Has anyone seen yellow, spongy mushrooms before?

Yes!! These are in your wine barrel right? Well in one of our wine barrells when we first moved in was having problems with mushrooms. Maybe not yellowy ones, but they were a pain. this is what I did(and I haven't seen a trace of them since). I had to completely redo the wine barrell. I pulled all plants and removed the top 4 inches of soil (to make sure I got all roots). That seemed to work. I planted new plants in there and they grew just fine...without and intrusions. I don't know why they grew there, but that seemed to fix the problem.
Hey, Abby, I think your wine barrell looks very promising. I remember what it looked like 2 years ago, after you first got it - and I can see progress!!. Those mushrooms are different than anything I've ever seen. I am going to show this blog site to Grandma tomorrow - it will be interesting to see what she says - altho CA is so much different than PA. Love, MOM
